Introduction from Chris Cloyd, DPMR Founder and former Board Member
Adam Broderick is a proud dad and a wildly enthusiastic runner who loves to adventure as much as he loves to race. You can often catch him on singletrack around Tahoe, smiling while volunteering at a local running community event, or deep in the High Sierra on another one of those silly “bad ideas“

Where are you from and where do you live now?
From San Diego, but was born again in the mountains near Crested Butte, Colorado. I currently live amongst the singletrack in Northwest Reno.
When did you begin running and/or long-distance running, if that applies? Why?
My first memorable trail run was about 15 years ago, above a fjord in Southwest Alaska. A monthlong rainstorm paused for one day, and so took advantage by hiking 5,000’ to the nearest summit. When I finally started downhill, I felt the urge to let gravity guide me faster, and then the runner’s high kicked in. That sense of liberation found in the ‘flow-state’ that we often seek but rarely find. Over the next few years, my backpacking gear became lighter and my pace quickened. Now, I find almost as much joy in short, faster runs as I do in long, slower runs.
Do you race? Does racing motivate you? If not racing, what motivates you?
Racing brings out my competitive nature and I love it. Also, having goals on the calendar helps to hold me accountable.

Do you have any dream races (either hoping to qualify for or get selected for)?
I’d love to run States in the next several years.
What was the best running advice you’ve received?
“Run fast, take chances.” – Chris Cloyd
Do you have a favorite on-trail food or nutrition strategy and favorite post-run meal or beverage?
I eat a lot of Fig Bars while running slow-to-medium pace. They taste good, cost little, energize well, and go down easily. For faster efforts, I’ve been enjoying NeverSecond gels, and I usually take Tailwind or similar liquid hydration for longer efforts.
Do you have a favorite recipe to share?
‘Mean, Green, & Feelin’ 18’ (green smoothie) – Blend power greens, banana, greek yogurt, honey, peach/mango/pineapple, vanilla protein powder, maybe some oats. I keep power greens in the freezer so I don’t need to add ice. DO NOT drink shortly before running unless you want to run straight to a bathroom. For a ‘Purple Power Punch’, sub berries for fruit and add beets with cocoa powder.
What was your favorite recent running experience?
Fastpacking sections of the PCT and JMT. I try to do a few multi-day mountain adventures every summer.
What was your most challenging/ character-building running experience?
Overuse injuries and not being able to run for the final 3-4 weeks before racing has taught me to trust my foundation and to focus on the little things which can be easily neglected. Ex: pilates, stretching, hip and ankle flexibility. When I have to stop running for a month before a 50k or a 100-mile race, I question a lot of things. When those things turn out alright in the end (although others may arise), I learn that there’s more in the hypothetical tank than imagined…and that sometimes the body simply needs more rest than we think.
What are your upcoming racing/adventure plans?
I usually run Silver State 50-50 in May. It’s basically my backyard. I’d like to shave 15-min off my 50k PR, but the stars will need to align for that to happen. I also signed up for Mountain Tiger (Soda Springs to Sugar Bowl) this July and hope that I can make it. And I may run Rio del Lago or another WS qualifier this fall. Other than that, some big non-race days in the Sierra.
What do you do for a living? Is it hard to fit in time for training?
Variety is the spice of life. I’m currently piecing together part-time work, and I’m a single dad half of the time. Working on a big project now, and hope to unveil it to the local running community in early summer.
What led you to join DPMR? Community!
Running with like-minded people, and people in general. This is mostly an individual sport, but the trail running community is also the most inclusive that I’ve witnessed. I joined DPMR to surround myself with more fun and inspiring people.
What has been your favorite DPMR experience so far?
I’ve most enjoyed the end-of-season Pub Runs in October, and the weekly group runs (including speedwork). All of these things could be done alone, but they’re more fun with friends.

Favorite local trail?
Sugar Bowl to Squaw, or Spooner to Incline via Snow Valley Peak and Flume Trail.
Do you have a mental training technique, mantra, or similar that you rely on to combat the mentally trying times of a longer run?
Caffeine and carbs? Point-to-points or big loops with a time deadline.
Do you listen to audio while you run and if so, what have you been enjoying lately?
I listen to music about half the time. Depends on the run. Lately, I’ve been getting hyped to Sofi Tukker, and if I’m going long and slow I will podcast or put on something like Sol Rising for melodic background beats.
Recovery technique(s) that you swear by?
More foam rollers/massage balls, more protein, and more sleep. Less beer, less sugar, and less drive time.
Do you have a favorite piece of running gear (hydration system, shoe, clothing layer, sock, etc.)?
Current faves include Topo Ultraventure or Mtn Racer shoes on trail, On Cloudmonster shoes on road, Julbo sunglasses, Injinji socks, and my new Terignota vest.
What other outdoor or indoor interests do you have?
Snowboarding, biking, surfing, camping, yardwork, and hunting for jackalopes.
Any interesting facts about yourself you would like to share?
Most people say I’m friendly with good energy, but I’m probably best known for my off-the-couch persona and forgetting somewhat-important things like shoes or t-shirts for 50-mile days above 10,000’.
