As a runner and a running coach, I’m a big believer in getting outside of your comfort zone. In training, in races, and in life, we discover the most about ourselves when we seek out discomfort. Last weekend, I had the privilege of announcing at the finish lines of the Canyons Endurance Runs races in Auburn, CA. I did this two years ago as well, and I love everything about it- the energy, the inspiration, and the emotion from runners, crews, and families. It’s a different way for me to experience the event and I love seeing it through another lens. It’s a reminder to me of the variety of ways in which we can experience this beautiful running community.

The race weekend had amazing weather for the runners, which translated to chilly weather for the spectators. Several times I got in the mic and thanked the spectators for sticking with us through some chilly weather throughout the day and night. As I looked around at all the people supporting the runners, it got me thinking about the village it takes to get runners across these finish lines. There are several incredible ways you can be a part of the trail running community besides lining up on the start line. Whether you are totally new to the community or a seasoned vet who has been around the sport for years, let me remind you of a few different ways you can uplift other runners and be a part of something special:
- Spectating
Perhaps the option with the lowest bar to clear. Just show up to a race and support runners from the sidelines! You can do this for friends and runners that you know, or for total strangers. I can tell you from experience that as a runner, I’m appreciative of all the spectators, whether I know them or not. I love getting hugs from my family, but I also love getting a high-five or a cheer from a stranger!
- Crewing and pacing
Runners almost always need assistance at longer ultras. Whether it’s meeting them at aid stations, running miles with them on the course, or just providing emotional support at an aid station, it’s all very welcome. Some of my best memories come from these moments in races. Whether I’m the one suffering and I’m watching the people who love me take care of me, or whether I’m on the other side trying to bring my runner back to life and energize them, so many of these occasions are enshrined in my memory forever!
- Volunteering
Perhaps the toughest of the three options I’ve listed, this one is the biggest game-changer from a perspective standpoint. If you’re familiar with running races but haven’t volunteered before, I highly encourage you to see the other side of the operation. As I announced all weekend and helped with tasks wherever I was needed, I was reminded of the immense work that goes into these races. It’s one thing to run a race and be grateful for the volunteers; it’s another thing to be that volunteer and shift your entire mindset around what that means.
So, as I came away from this race weekend, I was filled with motivation from the runners, admiration for the sacrifices of the volunteers, and gratitude for the crew, pacers and spectators who made it a more special experience for everyone there. This sport is special, and while running races is my true passion, the joy of being around others chasing their goals is equally life-changing! If you haven’t already (and even if you have!), I hope you’ll experience it for yourself.
