I arrived in Carson City just past 5 am, missing the send-off for the 100-mile runners by a whisker. The atmosphere at the start area was serene, with only a few runners trickling in for the commencement of the 60k race. Accompanied by my husband Dane, we cherished some peaceful moments until it was time to hit the trail.
As we set off towards Ash Canyon Road, I sensed a subtle undertone of anticipation in the air, likely due to the possibility of the hottest race day ever recorded for this event. The climb to Snow Peak approached sooner than I expected, and I decided to maintain a comfortable pace, not wanting to exhaust myself with a long way ahead. Along the way, I exchanged friendly words with fellow runners who seemed to be in good spirits, although it was still early in the day.
After conquering the ascent to Snow Peak and soaking in its awe-inspiring view, I didn’t linger at the aid station and grabbed a few salty snacks before continuing. The following miles treated me to breathtaking vistas that couldn’t help but bring a smile to my face.
As I made my way towards Tunnel Creek, I had the pleasure of encountering a few friends along the route. Quick greetings were exchanged as we all pressed on, eager not to lose momentum.
Reaching the Hobart aid station for the second time, I embarked on the path, slightly worried I had taken a wrong turn. Thankfully, just before panic set in, a prominent sign appeared, assuring me I was on the right track. With renewed confidence, I followed the trail that would lead me back to the finish.
Anticipating a refreshing break at the waterfall aid station around mile 31.5, I was surprised to find out it was a bit further ahead at mile 32. Nonetheless, the cold orange slices and ice-cold coke were much-needed rewards. However, my excitement dwindled upon realizing there were actually 7 more miles to the finish, not the 4 I had hoped for. Despite the unexpected distance, I persevered, taking in the breathtaking scenery along the way.
As the finish neared, I envisioned a speedy downhill descent. But to my surprise, the route consisted of extended switchbacks with fantastic views, keeping me at a higher elevation for an extended period.
The last 3 miles proved to be the most challenging, lacking shade, and my desire to finish grew stronger. However, the sight of my husband cheering me on from the sidelines provided the motivation I needed to increase my pace and cross that finish line.
Upon completion, I couldn’t help but feel an immediate sense of satisfaction. The race had been thoroughly enjoyable, and I felt great throughout the entire journey.
A massive shout-out is due to all the incredible aid station and course volunteers! Their kindness and assistance made a world of difference, and I’m immensely grateful for their support.
Until the next adventure,
Angela
