Intro by Chris Cloyd:
“Every single DPMR event that I’ve attended during my time with the club has introduced me to new people. Each time, at least one of those people leaves a mark. Meeting Jerry at Point Mariah this year was one of those instances. One of the things I’ve appreciated the most about our sport is how everyone in the trail running community has their own reasons for getting into running and going running and racing (if they choose to race). I lean on those unique and personal reasons for example and inspiration. At Point Mariah this year, Jerry raced with more grit than I think I can muster, and finished the marathon with more grace than I know I possess on my own challenging days in the mountains. Some days don’t go like we drew them up, and it’s on those days that our community means the most. Jerry is quite the trail runner, and I’ve enjoyed learning more about his background and person since Point Mariah. We’re glad to call you ‘one of us’ here at DPMR, and look forward to more trail time in 2023 and beyond. If you don’t know Jerry yet, read on!“

Where are you from and where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Illinois. I moved to Citrus Heights in 1998.
When did you begin running and/or long-distance running, if that applies? Why?
I started running in 2017. I had quit smoking and wanted to be a positive role model for my kids. I have lots of reasons as to why I run, but those were the ones that got me started.

Do you race? Does racing motivate you? If not racing, what motivates you?
I race. I like the camaraderie and the community coming together. Having a race on the calendar motivates me to get out of bed everyday and put in the work. Right now, I’m really enjoying speed work on the track. It feels good.

Do you have any dream races (either hoping to qualify for or get selected for)?
Participating in Western States. It’s a world famous race in our backyard.
Do you have a favorite on-trail food or nutrition strategy and favorite post-run meal or beverage?
Mashed potatoes and pickles during. Poke after
What was your favorite running experience this past year?
Watching friends and teammates finish Rio del Lago.
What was your most challenging/ character-building experience this past year?
Having a tough training block for Rio del Lago, still starting the race and not finishing. It’s probably the best thing that’s happened to me (running related) looking back on it.
What are your upcoming racing/adventure plans?
Black Canyon 100K in February is it for now.
What do you do for a living? Is it hard to fit in time for training?
I am a project manager for an electrical contractor. I have a pretty flexible schedule, luckily.
What led you to join DPMR?
A tough day at the Point Mariah trail marathon was a blessing. I got to meet a lot of the members at the end of the day.
What has been your favorite DPMR experience so far?
The aid station at Point Mariah was off the hook. So much fun. I left laughing every time.
Favorite local trail?
PCT castle peak/ Donner area
Recovery technique(s) that you swear by?
Ice bath with Epsom salt
What other outdoor or indoor interests do you have?
I also enjoy hiking, camping with the kiddos, and fishing
