March was Women’s History Month, which is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American History. I decided that Mirna Valerio (@themirnavator), and her book, A Beautiful Work in Progress fit well within that theme. Mirna has focused her life on spreading health awareness and advocating for diversity. On that note, did you know that DPMR published its Diversity Statement earlier this year?

In this memoir, Mirna shares her journey and invites us to join her by continuing to put one step in front of the other.
This is a very inspiring book and a celebration of life, of diversity and of our bodies that take us on incredible adventures, whatever their color, shape or size.
While it is incredibly inspiring, it also draws a very candid picture of the challenges that society creates for minorities, or the stigmas on body conformity. Mirna takes us with her in this uphill battle and calls on the systemic challenges that people who “look” different face.
Eventually, this books celebrate that all bodies are beautiful and able to accomplish incredible feats. It highlights how critical movement is for overall health (physical and mental) and encourages everyone to find a way to move their body.
