From our friends at the Land Trust – Watch for TDLT/DPMR Trail Work Days on the calendar coming soon.
It’s shaping up to be another full summer of trail work for the Truckee Donner Land Trust (TDLT)! Last year we saw the completion of four new miles of Donner Lake Rim Trail connecting from the Glacier Way Trailhead in Tahoe Donner, through existing trails behind the Armstrong Tract, to the Trout Creek Trailhead on Northwoods Blvd. In addition, we have flagged a route on the south side of Donner Lake through Donner Memorial State Park and over the crest toward Sugar Bowl where you will be able to connect to the trails of the Royal Gorge area. The permitting process will be a multi-year effort, with trail construction beginning the minute permits are in hand. It’s exciting to see the Rim trail drawing closer to completion!
If you haven’t had an opportunity to check out spectacular Lower Carpenter Valley on one of the guided docent hikes, click here to register for one this summer. TDLT along with the Truckee Trails Foundation Trail Crew have also been busy constructing a new nature trail in Lower Carpenter Valley that will showcase the meadow in a more intimate way than the previous experience of hiking on the road. That trail, along with a newly constructed trailhead, are part of the preparations we have been working diligently on to open the property to the public later this summer.
In other exciting news, TDLT is in the final stages of fundraising for the Frog Lake property and we anticipate closing escrow early this summer. This property, along with the other 2400 acres of newly acquired land on Red Mountain and Carpenter ridge, will be integral to our planned Frog Lake to Independence Lake trail project. This will be a multi-year project. Public access to Frog Lake later this summer will be on the existing Warren Lake and Red Dot trails.
Along with all the exciting new trail projects coming up, we will be busy maintaining our existing network of trails as well. I hope to see some of you on one of the many volunteer trail days TDLT will be hosting this summer and a link to register for those events will be on the Land Trust website as we get closer to summer.
In the meantime, let’s hope we haven’t seen the last of winter and happy trails to everyone!
