I met Karen a couple of years ago when she and her husband Adam attended a Donner Party Mountain Runners kickoff season event. We got to talking about running (of course, what else?) and that she had never run anything further than a marathon and neither had I. We both wanted to run our first 50K.
As it turned out, neither one of us ran a 50K that year but we both ran our first 50K the next year and Karen killed it! She ran it in 5:15 hours.
I also realized she and her husband Adam are two of the nicest people I’ve met. She served on the Donner Party Board of Directors for 2 years as treasurer, works full time as a CPA and Controller for Peak Design, her professional runner husband’s crew extraordinaire, and trains for her own races.
There is definitely more than meets the eye with Karen. She is friendly, down to earth, easy to chat with, and the perfect member of DPMR. She loves to run, even if she isn’t always as motived as some of our “super” ultra runners in the club. She always has a smile and if I need someone to crew for me, Karen would be my first choice.
Where are you from and where do you live now? From Channahon Illinois, a small town 40 mins southwest of Chicago but currently living in Tahoe City.
What are your upcoming racing/adventure plans? I’m considering another 50k or maybe maybe a 50 miler, but that may need to wait until 2021. Other than that, I hope to put a dent into my goal of running the entire TRT in single or multi-day segments with my girl, KelleyAnn!
What do you do for a living? Is it hard to fit in time for training? I’m in Finance/Accounting and recently started working for Peak Design, a SF based company that has a few employees working remote from Tahoe. I’m stoked to have a bit more flexibility to train but will probably still struggle with motivation to train midweek. I’m a weekend warrior through and through!
