Winter 2016/17 was one for the record books that made for fantastic ski conditions, but the multiple atmospheric river events combined with above-average snowpack runoff have also contributed to excessive erosion on many of our area trails. With its steep nature and tender soils, one of the areas hardest hit was in Johnson Canyon. Traditional trail drainage features that have historically been adequate to deal with runoff were inundated and led to several sections of the Wendin Way access trail eroding beyond a safe level.
*Kevin Starr is the Stewardship Coordinator of the Truckee Donner Land Trust. Kevin is working to complete the Land Trust’s flagship trail project, the Donner Lake Rim Trail. He also leads trailbuilding crews and tackles the Land Trust’s numerous stewardship duties year-round. A member of the Truckee community since 1991 and when not working on the trails for the Land Trust and Truckee Trails Foundation, you can find Kevin outside skiing, climbing, and biking on some of those same trails.
