This month we feature one of our up-and-coming members, Owen Brown, of Truckee. You might see Owen training on the Sawtooth Trail, or at an Alder Creek Cross Country meet. We hope you enjoy learning more about this inspiring young DPMR!
Have you always lived in Truckee? What grade are you in and what school do you go to?
I’ve lived in Truckee my whole life since Day 1. I’m going into the 6th grade at Alder Creek Middle School.
When did you begin running and why? How old were you at the time?
I started running a little more than a year ago to train for a race. I was 10 years old. I wanted to find a race all by myself and picked a 5k by REI in Oakland. I finished strong in that race. 8th place out of 35 racers including adults.
Does anyone else in your family run? Do you run together or alone?
My mom and my dad are pretty big runners. I’d say my Dad is more intense because he runs longer distances and wants to do Western States one day. My mom has run three marathons and mostly runs with her friends.
I like to run alone most of the time. I get to listen to podcasts when I run. I mostly listen to the Bill Simmons and Jalen & Jacoby podcasts. I like listening to them to keep up on sports.
Do you race? Does racing motivate you? if not racing, what motivates you?
I run races but not competitive races. I don’t want to be judged on how fast or slow I run. I just like how I get to run freely and not care about what time or place I get. I like that there is a course to follow during races though and aid stations depending on what they have. The aid stations at the Running Wild 5k (for Truckee Elementary) had candy at the tables. My friends grabbed all the M&Ms. I grabbed pretzels because the salt tasted good.
I did one of the DPMR kids races. There were only three of us and I wish a few more people did it but I came in first. I could always hear where my younger brother was because he was yelling the whole time.
Do you have any running heroes that you look up to? What inspires you about them?
I’m motivated by watching the track athletes at the Olympics from all countries. Usain Bolt started from the bottom and is now one of the most popular names in the world. My dad also inspires my running by pushing me farther and farther every day out of my comfort zone – not really far like trying to climb Mt. Everest but just a little but so my comfort zone can expand. And so we can run together.
Do you have any dream races?
I’d like to do CIM because you run all around Sacramento and I want to see the city that way. When I was 5 I told my Dad that I’d do a marathon with him by the time I was 8. Then I said I’d do it when I’m 9. I don’t when I’ll be able to do one now. I’d like to pace my dad at one of his races depending on how far.
What is your favorite post-run meal or beverage?
Usually I eat a corn dog after running. I like to drink water after.
What was your favorite running experience this past year?
The Running Wild 5k for Truckee Elementary was my favorite because I came up with the name that they used. I felt good running that day.
What was your most challenging experience this past year and did you learn anything from it?
Yesterday was my first practice with the Alder Creek Cross Country team. The run was hard and the stretching at the end was tough. I learned to pace myself so I don’t run out of breath or start cramping. I thought it was fun though and I’m excited to get into better shape.
What are your upcoming racing/running plans?
I want to be on the Alder Creek Cross Country team.
What has been your favorite DPMR experience so far?
I really liked the kid race and the t-shirt.
What is your favorite local trail?
Sawtooth. It’s right behind my house and its familiar to me. The trail is nice and I like being out there listening to podcasts.
What other outdoor or indoor interests do you have?
I like basketball. Playing and watching. The Warriors are my favorite team because my dad is from Oakland. Klay Thompson is my favorite player. I like snowboarding also because its easier than skiing.
Any interesting facts about yourself you would like to share?
I picked the name of the Truckee Elementary Running Wild.
