RIP John Candy – I hope you all get that reference, and, if you don’t, go commit yourself to some obscure 90s cinema.
I hope all of you have been out enjoying the weather as much as I have – the spring skiing and boarding has been fantastic, the paddle boarding has been stellar (wait for the calm-wind days, please), and the running opportunities have been abundant. If you enjoy road running (WRONG), the street sweepers have made the most of the weather and improved your experience appreciably.
If you enjoy snowshoe running or even regular-shoe running on packed-down snow, the snowmobile routes and lower-elevation options have been in GREAT condition. All of these advantages have timed themselves perfectly with the start of the race season, with the Way Too Cool (WAY TOO EARLY) 50k coming up this weekend.
Normally, I’d be shying away from this race due to its position in the calendar (February is for snowboarding, not training), but the weather has urged me back onto the trails in the foothills and into my running shoes whenever the opportunity presented itself up here in Truckee/Tahoe.
I don’t have the base I’d like for a race, but I look forward to a day on the trails with a ton of friends and fellow unafraid DPMR athletes. I look forward to those race-day nerves and that elevated pulse at the start line. I look forward to that finish line beer with all of you that will be there. Most of all, I look forward to trail running, because no matter the season it’s still one of my favorite things. Hope to see you all down in Cool this Saturday!
