20 DPMR members rallied on Monday, June 2, 2015 for this little gem of a run led by DPMR board member and super-motivator, Helen Pelster. Several regulars as well as some new faces joined the run in our Truckee backyard of Tahoe Donner. As always with DPMR group runs, distance and speed preferences spanned the spectrum so there was company & conversation for all on the course.
After a brief meet & greet and overview of the run, Helen led the group down a gradual descent (approx. 200 ft) on the fire road that is Carpenter Valley Road for about 0.8 miles. At that point, we dipped down and to the right onto some nice single track. After crossing the North Fork of Prosser Creek, via a stable wooden ladder bridge, we began our ascent, which totaled roughly 400 feet of climbing.
Once we found the cut off from the fire road, the single track was easy to follow and didn’t leave much room for error. At approximately 1.4 miles into the run we crossed another fire road and continued on single track to our turn around point at 1.7 miles in. From here we took in the views of Castle Peak to the west and all the way to Northstar to the South. The 360 degree views were dramatic with the lighting of a setting sun and clouds which seemed to be touchable. A few runners continued on for a longer run while the majority of us made our way back to our starting point.
The descent was quick and easy from a technical standpoint – no sneaker rocks or roots to trip us along the way. After crossing the ladder bridge on our way back and meandering back to Carpenter Valley Road, we gradually climbed the final 200 feet to return to our cars. Short and sweet little Monday run for sure!
