Wild weather could not dampen the spirits of the many people who showed up for our second annual Memorial Day Picnic and fun runs.
All of the group runs went off without a hitch, with the point-to-point group starting from Stampede at 8:30 and making their way to the Donner Picnic Grounds in plenty of time for festivities. Runners tackling the Animal Trail were off at 9:30, and the 4-mile group running down to the creek and back took off at 10:00.
As with last year, the highlight of the day was the kids’ fun runs. There was an option for everyone, with a 1 1/4 mile loop, and a 1/3 mile loop for the younger set. Everyone worked hard, and judging by the smiles, they had a great time. All the kids earned recycled race medals.
Running activities finished up just in time to avoid the thunder, hail, and pouring rain that graced the picnic! We hastily erected tarps, but lacking all the proper equipment (We had been quite optimistic about the forecast!), we were forced to prop it up with sticks that had to be held with a person on each corner. Chaz kept grilling Chaz-adillas, despite the rain, and everyone threw on rain jackets and enjoyed the incredible food.
The rain didn’t really want to let up, but the hail meant we didn’t have to add any more ice to the drink buckets. There were some incredible raffle prizes, and everyone went home with beautiful DPMR water bottles, courtesy of Silver Sage Center in Reno.
One Facebook commentor said it was the most exciting picnic she’d ever been to! Well, there’s nothing like cracking thunder to add a little excitement to the day. The biggest reasons for the success of the day though were the support of so many volunteers, and the great attitudes of all the runners – grownups and kids alike. It was wonderful to see so many of you out there, and I hope to see even more at next year’s picnic!
