As winter has come upon us and we appear to be blessed with a reasonable start to some snow covered activities, others may be looking forward to opportunities to initiate their New Year’s Resolutions that incorporates trail running.
The Canyons Endurance Runs is well on its way to a successful sophomore year with the edition of our 100K event to pair with last year’s 50K. RD Chaz Sheya and two fellow DPMR members Pete Broomhall and Chris Perillo have joined forces to bring what we believe will be an Ultra Trail Classic for years to come! The Canyons brings an event that covers the most beautiful and challenging aspects of the Western States course. With an elevation profile that extends beyond 14k of climbing in the 100K and 9k for the 50K race you will experience sierra foothill vistas, single track down hills and a trail that many say is “The Birthplace of Ultras!”
This year’s event has already created quite a buzz with some of the most talented runners on the circuit signing up to tackle this race. Alex Varner, Ryan Ghelfi, Larissa Dannis and many others have either signed up or expressed interest, (Rob Krar and Max King!!) in jumping aboard and why not? We plan to have the most experienced and motivated folks manning the aid stations, great sponsors and a post-race party that will surely be an old school festival of food, drink and smack talk.
UTMB has taken notice to our preparation and awarded our race a prestigious 3 points towards qualifying for everyone’s European bucket list race. Our goal is to be recognized by WSER100 as a suitable qualifier as well and this will depend heavily on participation at our 100K race. DPMR members are given a discount to their entry fee so what is holding you back?
If you are looking for opportunities to escape the snow and take advantage of your high elevation lung capacity stay tuned because we plan to have several training runs each month from January up to the race May 2nd. You can follow us on our FB page as well as our website www.runcanyons.com Our first official training run is scheduled (weather permitting) Jan 24th. We will be launching from Foresthill (the start/finish area) with options of 18mi and 25mi to El Dorado Creek and The Pump. These events will be a fun way to safely experience the trails with other likeminded folks, free of charge with tailgating finish fun for all!
Cheers to a Happy New Year full of Running, Trails & Adventures!
