Welcome Donner Party Mountain Runners Founding Members to our first monthly newsletter!
So much has happened since Pete Broomhall and I were out running last December and discussed the idea of starting a running club, that I could write a short novel about it all. I will try to keep this as short and sweet as possible while still highlighting some important details.
Due to our unfortunate winter, we were forced to keep on running in lieu of the lackluster skiing conditions and the idea of a club was mentioned a couple more times, but not really going anywhere. So on January 24, I sent out an email to the handful of runners I know to see if we could gain some traction and interest from other runners in our area. Our first unofficial meeting at Mellow Fellow included about 8 guys, a lot of beer drinking, some talk of running, a little discussion of the club possibilities and the distraction of a bingo game we were made to participate in. We left that night with one person pitching in their $50 and only a slight idea of how we were really going to get this club up and running. Yet the seed was planted.
Fortunately someone in the group managed to get the word out to Helen Pelster, our Secretary Extraordinaire, and asked her if she would be interested in helping since she has past experience in starting non-profit organizations. Helen graciously offered to host our next meeting at her home on February 13 and this informal group of long distance runners took off at a sprinter’s pace. Helen pretty much did all of the administrative work, that would have taken the motley crew of guys that first met at the pub a year’s time to complete, in a matter of just a few weeks time, and whipped us all into shape for what was to come. Our original goal was to be officially up and running with a website, where we could start attracting a paid membership, by May 1. We beat this deadline by 2 full weeks and the rest is now history!
As of this writing, we now have 87 Founding Members and are growing this number with each passing week. Our Facebook Group surpassed 500 members about a week ago and is growing daily. We had a super successful Kickoff Party on Memorial Day that had about 75 people in attendance and included 3 separate group runs, an awesome kid’s race and lots of tasty food. Though we were started by a group of ultrarunners, our club includes runners of all distances and from young to getting older. Amazing to me is that in addition to the local Tahoe/Truckee folks, there are many runners from the Reno, Carson, Sacramento, San Francisco and surrounding areas that have become Founding Members and see the value in our club as they come up to our beloved playground and run on our amazing and endless trails!
The energy and community building within the DPMR is incredible, with most of us now running with other people more in the last few months than we have in our entire lives. This energy is certainly showing in our members’ race results with many wins and solid performances already this year, at least one course record and an exciting race season still ahead of us. I know that I personally would not be where I am in my fitness right now, without the support and encouragement the club is providing me.
This is the part where I could go on and on and on about the exciting things to come for the Donner Party Mountain Runners that have been discussed. However, all of our time is precious, so I will just say that I really look forward to seeing how this all evolves over the years.
